André Marinus de Ruyter

André Marinus de Ruyter (born 26 November 1968) is a South African business executive and energy expert. He is best known for his tenure as the Group Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Eskom, the South African state-owned electricity public utility, from January 2020 to February 2023.

Prior to Eskom, De Ruyter held various leadership positions in the corporate sector. He has experience in the petroleum, chemicals, and energy industries. Notably, he served as a senior executive at Sasol for many years.

His time at Eskom was marked by significant challenges including:

  • Load Shedding: Frequent and prolonged power outages became a defining feature of his tenure due to aging infrastructure, inadequate maintenance, and alleged corruption.
  • Debt Burden: Eskom's massive debt remained a major problem, hindering its ability to invest in necessary upgrades and repairs.
  • Corruption Allegations: De Ruyter publicly spoke out about corruption and sabotage within Eskom, making him a controversial figure.

De Ruyter's resignation from Eskom was brought forward after an explosive television interview where he alleged widespread political interference and corruption within the organization and the government. His allegations sparked widespread debate and calls for further investigation into the state of affairs at Eskom.

Since leaving Eskom, De Ruyter has published a book detailing his experiences titled "Truth to Power: My Three Years at Eskom".
